Gov't to propose tax, employment, social package
Monday 13:17, January 26th, 2009
There's no need to prepare a new budget for 2009, but the current one will be amended in several regards in order to keep budget balance on track, Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsány said.

The government will propose changes in tax, employment and social-support legislation, the prime minister added.

Gyurcsány spoke to MTI after holding consultations with representatives from Hungary's economic and civil sphere prior to an extraordinary parliamentary session on the economic crisis scheduled for Thursday.

The government will prepare and submit to parliament the most important and urgent bills within a month and a half after the session in order that the major part of the measures may take effect by July 1, the prime minister said.

The government is preparing a comprehensive tax, employment and social package, Gyurcsány said, adding that Hungary needs more than reforms, in many cases a new, national, social and economic strategy.

Hungarian industrialists suggested at the meeting that the government consider suspending the capital gains tax for a couple of years to increase the inclination to save and purchase government securities, the head of the industrialist organization MGyOSz Péter Futó told the press after the meeting.

In response to the suggestion, Gyurcsány said the government did not take a stand on any tax issues during the Sunday consultations. Neither did the government make any comment with regard to the suggestions raised by many participants in the talks, namely that they would prefer a decrease in taxes burdening labor and an increase in the value-added tax, the prime minister added.

When asked about the recent weakening of the forint, Gyurcsány said the government aims at preparing a comprehensive program which could increase the country's prestige. The cabinet has been consulting its policies with the central bank, he added.

Prime Minister Gyurcsány will meet with President László Sólyom on Monday afternoon. The PM, who initiated the meeting, will brief Sólyom on the current economic situation in the country and the direction of possible measures the government plans to take. (MTI – Econews)
